Professorship for Digital Cultures and Digital Humanities (m/f/d)

The Department for Arts and Cultural Studies examines questions concerning the preservation, scientific exploration, and communication of art and cultural heritage in its various material and media forms in both, research and teaching. It focusses on the changes in the fundamentals and conditions of artistic and cultural production, as well as the preservation and reception of cultural assets, particularly regarding museums and archives, due to technological developments. The advertised professorship will substantially expand and deepen the focus on digital transformation in the cultural and humanities fields.

 

General job description and profile:

The responsibilities of the university professor include the dedicated representation of the subject area in research, teaching, and its further development. The future position holder should have their focus at the intersection of digital cultures, digital cultural heritage, and digital humanities and strive to building their own research group in this field. Participation in the department’s inter- and transdisciplinary activities is expected, particularly regarding national and international networking in the field, as well as the continuous development of the department’s teaching offerings, involvement in the development of the planned PhD “Cultural Heritage,” and taking on management and leadership responsibilities within the department in consultation with the department head. The future position holder should actively engage in research on the topic of “Digital Transformation” as a cross-cutting university-wide research topic.

Your tasks:

  • Conducting independent research and acquiring third-party funding for research projects at regional, national, and international levels
  • Internationally visible publication activities, including publishing research results in high-ranking scientific journals and presenting the results at relevant national and international conferences
  • Conducting courses and examinations as well as supervising students within the framework of these courses
  • Supervising theses
  • Developing innovative continuing education offerings in the field of digital cultures and digital humanities, including summer schools and lecture series
  • Taking on organizational, social, and economic management and leadership tasks within the department, including participation in organizational, administrative, and evaluation tasks, as well as collaboration with the statutory student representation
  • Intra- and interinstitutional cooperation activities in research, teaching, and transfer, including as part of the membership in the CLARIAH-AT research network

 

Your profile:

To be considered for the position, the following selection criteria must be met:

  • Completed higher education degree (Doctorate/PhD), preferably in a humanities, cultural science, or information science discipline
  • Relevant habilitation or equivalent qualification
  • Proven internationally recognized research activity relevant to the field of digital cultures and/or digital humanities
  • Relevant publication activities in renowned international journals
  • Proven inter- and preferably also transdisciplinary research experience
  • Anchoring in the relevant scientific community (demonstrated by active conference participation, memberships, co-authorships, editorial roles, etc.), national and international networking, and experience in participating in thematically relevant associations
  • Experience and high didactic suitability in university teaching, particularly demonstrated by teaching evaluations
  • Experience in supervising theses (especially master’s theses and dissertations/PhD theses)
  • Experience in acquiring third-party funding
  • Good German language skills (at least B1) and excellent English language skills (at least C1) in spoken and written form
  • Leadership experience and management competence in social, organizational, and economic aspects
  • Equal opportunity and diversity competence is expected, or in the absence thereof, the willingness to complete relevant further training within two years of starting the professorship
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Desirable Skills and Knowledge:

  • Successful acquisition of third-party funding as a principal investigator
  • Experience in university self-governance and committee work
  • Relevant professional experience outside the higher education sector
  • Research experience at the interface between humanities and computer/information sciences
  • Experience in designing, developing, and leading continuing education university courses

The advertised professorship is supported as an endowed professorship by the state of Lower Austria. The professor will be appointed based on a permanent employment according to the appointment procedure laid down in section § 98 UG (Austrian University Act).

The remuneration for this Professorship will be EUR 6,362.50 € gross per month, on a full-time basis (according to the collective agreement of the universities §49 VwGr. A1). A willingness to negotiate higher salary exists for candidates with corresponding qualifications and professional experience.
