From September 23 to 27, the Center for Cultural Property Protection, in cooperation with the National Defence Academy and the Amt für Kultur of the Principality of Liechtenstein, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), organised the Cultural Property Protection Course 2024. This year's course was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
The international civilian and military participants had a unique opportunity to share their interdisciplinary knowledge on an equal footing and to enhance their own expertise. High-level speakers from the military, cultural property protection organisations, emergency services and academia enriched the course with their expertise and highlighted the latest developments in the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy. Through first-hand reports, the participants gained a comprehensive insight into the challenges and opportunities of cultural property protection and the need for protective measures. The course provided basic knowledge and fostered a deeper understanding of the current and future challenges of cultural property protection at the international level.
Hands-on scenario training
The Center for Cultural Property Protection specialises in practical and authentic scenario training that put theoretical knowledge into practice and strengthens personal action skills. An outstanding element of the ESDC Cultural Property Protection Course 2024 was the specially developed scenario training "The Ancient Temple". In this training, participants were placed in a realistic disaster situation to work together to develop solutions for the protection and preservation of cultural property. They worked in groups, each representing one of the pillars of The Ancient Temple: civil actors, the military and emergency organisations in a crisis situation. They analysed the specific challenges and developed both short-term emergency measures and long-term conservation strategies.
The course highlighted the complexity and interdisciplinary requirements of cultural property protection in crisis situations and emphasised the importance of cooperation and communication between different actors with different priorities and approaches. The 2024 course once again highlighted the challenges of (international) cultural property protection in crisis situations.
Continuing Education Programs of the Center for Cultural Property Protecion
This year, for the first time, the "ESDC Cultural Property Protection Course" took place as part of the new "International Cultural Property Protection, MCP" program. This MCP forms the first module of the "Cultural Property Protection and Disaster Response, CP" and can be flexibly combined up to an academic Master's degree as part of the Stackable Program.
