Description

"Steinzeitstream" is an add-on to the transdisciplinary research project "United by Crisis?", which explores the surroundings of the famous Neolithic settlement of Asparn/Schletz (Lower Austria). As part of the “Science Class 2023/2024”-initiative, students work in small groups to research the methods used in the project, which stem from the fields of archaeology, analytical chemistry and anthropology. They will find out how these methods work and for what purpose they are used in the project. The students do this both through independent research and through visits to researchers and activities of the project "United by crisis?". The children film their participation and use this material for the production of “cool explanatory videos” for their peers. Under the responsibility of the cooperating school, the students use the best sequences to create a short film on the project "United by crisis?" for the presentation at the Science Fair 2024-event. With "Steinzeitsteam", the students not only get an insight into the transdisciplinary research project "United by Crisis?". They also practice on how they can familiarize themselves with the functioning of scientific methods and on how to explain this to their peers. "Steinzeitstream" improves the students' understanding of scientific research processes and thus also helps to reduce scientific skepticism.

The complete video

Local middle school students documented their research on the archaeological site of Asparn/Schletz!

  • How does one investigate the origin of individuals through chemical analyses?
  • How does one identify deficiencies in Stone Age skeletons?
  • How does one copy an archaeological find using a camera and a 3D printer?
  • How does one explore the extent and dating of an archaeological site?

The students filmed and edited the video themselves.
