From 11 to 15 March, the Italian Centre for Defence Higher Studies (CASD) - Italy's first military university for higher education, leadership, soft skills and cyberspace - organised the Cultural Property Protection Course in Rome under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC).

The course was intended for military personnel, police officers and civilian experts. The aim of the course was to raise awareness of the need to protect cultural property and heritage in the EU area of operations. It also aimed to provide an overview of the scope of activities and efforts in the different areas of cultural heritage protection.
Dr Anna Kaiser was on site as a speaker on the topic of Cultural Heritage Protection in the 21st Century and led the working group exercise in which participants identified challenges to the protection of cultural goods and developed tools to address these challenges.

The ESDC provides education and training at EU level in the field of the Common Security and Defence Policy. The pilot course 'Cultural Property Protection' was designed by the Center for Cultural Property Protection in cooperation with the National Defence Academy and the Amt für Kultur of the Principality of Liechtenstein, held at the University for Continuing Education Krems in 2022 and has been integrated into the ESDC course catalogue for all network partner institutions.

From September 23 to 27, 2024, the Cultural Property Protection Course will again take place at the University for Continuing Education Krems.

European Security and Defence College (ESDC)

With the establishment of the ESDC in 2005, a network of institutions dealing with education and training in the field of the Common Security and Defence Policy at European level was created to provide both the EU institutions and the EU Member States with strategic training and qualified personnel. The aim of these training activities is to develop and promote a common understanding of the Common Security and Defence Policy among civilian and military personnel, and to identify and disseminate best practices in various thematic areas.
The ESDC now operates beyond Europe's borders. It promotes EU values and the exchange of best practices in the field of security and defence.
