Description

This study investigates the mental health of Austrian farmers, as international research indicates an increased prevalence of depression and suicidal tendencies in this profession. However, unlike other countries, Austria lacks scientifically-based studies that comprehensively address this issue. The aim of the study is to collect baseline data on mental disorders, stress, and addiction problems, and to identify particularly vulnerable groups. Various job-related stress factors, such as financial difficulties, social isolation, and high workloads, are also considered. Data will be collected through an anonymous online survey of farmers, as well as a representative sample of the Austrian general population. Standardized questionnaires, such as the PHQ-9 (for depression), GAD-7 (for anxiety disorders), and PSS-4 (for stress), will be used. Open-ended questions about stressors and resources will also capture individual coping strategies of the participants. The study is essential to develop targeted prevention and support measures for farmers and to promote their long-term mental health. Participation is anonymous, with farmers being recruited through agricultural chambers, while the general population will be recruited via a survey agency.
