In September 2024, the Center for Cultural Property Protection, together with the National Defence Academy and under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), will once again host the Cultural Property Protection Course at the University for Continuing Education Krems.

This year we celebrate a special anniversary: The 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict is 70 years old.
On this occasion, we are pleased to invite you to participate in the Cultural Property Protection Course 2024, which will take place from 23rd to 27th September 2024 on the Campus of the University for Continuing Education Krems.

The aim of the course is to raise awareness of the importance of the protection of cultural property and cultural heritage in the EU area of operations. It also aims to promote an integrated and holistic approach to the protection of cultural property in crisis situations, such as armed conflicts, based on best practices. During the course, participants will identify and analyse challenges to the protection of cultural property and will be provided with tools to address these issues.

The course will provide an opportunity to build a network of people working in the field of cultural property protection.  We invite civilians, military personnel and employees of response organisations to attend this important course and to enhance their knowledge and skills in this field.

Only through cooperation and mutual understanding can we collectively contribute to the development of a European Security Culture.

The course is held in English.
Fees depend on the registration option chosen.

► Registration deadline: 01/09/2024

Participation and registration

Each EU Member State has a number of national contact points or nominators who are responsible for registering selected candidates from that Member State for ESDC courses. If you are interested in attending the Cultural Property Protection Course, please ask your superior to contact your relevant national nominator via e-mail.

As part of the Certificate Program (CP) 'Cultural Property Protection and Disaster Response' and the Micro-Credential Program (MCP) 'International Cultural Property Protection', the Center for Cultural Property Protection also offers a limited number of seats in the ESDC courses held at the University for Continuing Education Krems.

Admission to the ESDC Cultural Property Protection Course is guaranteed for CP participants. The remaining seats will be allocated to MCP participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
