Panel discussion: Preserving the past – the role of science diplomacy in cultural heritage protection

Cultural heritage, encompassing both tangible artifacts and intangible traditions, is a cornerstone of human identity and historical continuity. However, it faces unprecedented threats from many angles: natural disasters, climate change, armed conflicts, urban development, and illicit trafficking to name a few. From the degradation of the Great Barrier Reef, to the disastrous effects of war on the ancient city of Palmyra, our collective cultural heritage faces a precarious future. Science diplomacy, which combines scientific knowledge with diplomatic efforts, offers a powerful approach to mitigate these threats and ensure the protection and preservation of cultural heritage worldwide. It holds promise to play a pivotal role in many ways, such as by fostering research collaborations, building capacity, shaping policy, and providing crisis response.

Buchpremiere: Vedran Džihić "Ankommen"

Politikwissenschafter Vedran Džihić, Senior Scientist am Österreichischen Institut für internationale Politik (oiip), einem Kooperationspartner der Universität, veröffentlicht sein neues Buch „Ankommen“. Dabei erzählt er von seiner Flucht vor dem Bosnienkrieg, der neu gefundenen Sicherheit in Österreich, aber auch von der ihm widerfahrenen Gleichgültigkeit und Benachteiligung.

Studie: Medienrezeption zum Thema „Flüchtlinge & Integration“

Seit vielen Jahren wird in Österreich über Migration, Integration und Flucht diskutiert. Wie wird in den Medien darüber berichtet? Im Auftrag des Österreichischen Integrationsfonds (ÖIF) wurde dies anhand von sechs Begriffen in sieben österreichischen Online-Tageszeitungen für elf Jahre untersucht. Die Frequenz- und Sentimentanalyse für den Zeitraum Jänner 2014 bis Mai 2024 zeigt, dass die Berichterstattung in allen Medien überwiegend im negativen Sentiment liegt. Überraschend ist auch, dass der Unterschied zwischen Qualitätsmedien und Boulevard in den Sentiments nicht besonders groß ist.

Conference on Science Diplomacy

The 1st Conference on Science Diplomacy in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe – jointly organised by the University for Continuing Education Krems (UWK) and the Executive Secretariat of the Central European Initiative (CEI-ES), with the involvement of the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance (EUSDA), will be held from 20th to 21st November 2024 in Trieste.

Annual Conference of the Project “European Dis/Orders”

The inaugural conference of the “European Dis/Orders” project will thus explore the following questions: How do “borders” shape identities? How are “borders” negotiated in art? How are “borders” produced in discourses? How and why are “borders” constructed? - In alignment with these themes, the conference will address the concept of “borders” from diverse perspectives: history, art, art history, cultural theory, environment, migration, and politics. Through an interdisciplinary and international dialogue, the objective is to critically analyze the construction of and narratives surrounding “borders” – especially regarding populist tendencies in European politics, climate change, and migration. The conference aims to highlight potential processes of de-bordering (Entgrenzung) within the realms of politics, law, environment, and art.
