Neurological diseases are worldwide a leading cause of disability and death. The globally increasing prevalence of neurological diseases underlines the socioeconomic importance for epidemiological measures to develop and maintain brain health.

Brain health is essential for physical and mental health, social well-being, productivity and creativity. Therefore, the focus should not only be on the treatment of neurological diseases and the prevention of further deterioration but as well on the promotion of brain health by a continuous development and a lifelong strengthening of the brain. This encompasses control of risk factors of neurological diseases, building up brain reserve as well as the socioeconomical, cultural and ecological context.

The aim of the course “Epidemiology and Brain Health” is to provide an overview on the concept of brain health and on the development of population or individually-based strategies for the maintenance of a healthy brain.

Knowledge on the spectrum of diagnoses, causes, treatment, prevention, global changes in prevalence and risk factors of neurological diseases will be provided. An interdisciplinary insight in factors and strategies to promote and maintain brain health includes the influence of biomedical, psychological, socioeconomic, political and environmental factors on an individual, population or health economic basis.

By providing methods knowledge in epidemiology and health economics, the course aims to empower students to acquire scientific evidence about brain health, to evaluate and interpret such data in a global and interdisciplinary context and to develop strategies for a healthy brain for clinical praxis or health management.
