The research projects of the center focus on the reappraisal of the music cultural heritage in Lower Austria and beyond. This includes monastic music collections and music archives as well as manorial private collections and musicians' memorials. With the research on Haydn a close cooperation is established with the Haydn Region Lower Austria and "Haydn Science".

As a special institution, the Center for Applied Music Research is working on the "Mailer Collection / Strauss Archive", established in 2008 at Danube University Krems, which makes a significant contribution to the research of dance and light music of the 19th century and, together with the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research, is working on the work and history of the world-famous Strauss dynasty of musicians.
