Description
Extracorporeal methods are broadly used in order to support organ function or to remove pathogenic substances from blood. Examples of clinically established methods are dialysis, liver support, immunoadsorption and lipid apheresis. However, some pathogenic substances (PAMP, pathogen-associated molecular patterns) can not or only insufficiently be removed
by these methods. These include bacterial membrane components such as endotoxins and lipopeptides. In addition, some of these toxins have different biological effects depending on the anticoagulant used. This project has the following goals:
1) Investigation of the interaction between human lipoproteins and PAMPs
2) Characterization of systems for removing PAMPs
3) Cell Permeability & Clearance of Uremic Toxins & Citrate
