Why do many young people feel that they are not taken seriously and not represented by politics? What could be done to counteract this? This interview with youth researcher Manfred Zentner in the “Wiener Zeitung” offers answers.
Then please take part in our anonymous survey on mobility intentions to help improve the working environment. A team of researchers from Maastricht University and our department is currently examining how corporate and state policies influence the mobility decisions of international professionals in Austria. The results of the study will provide insights into how states and companies can attract and retain international talent.
As co-organizer, we are pleased to announce that the next annual meeting of the Austrian Economic Association (NOeG) will take place in Krems in September 2025 and will focus on the topic of migration. The call for papers is open until March 15, 2025.
The next event of our DEMIG Online Talk series will take place on January 16th at 2 p.m. Benjamin Gonzalez O’Brien, Associate Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University will show how the racist narrative of “migrant crime”, which spread across the country from the 1920s onwards, has shaped modern immigration policy and rhetoric, including the policy of sanctuaries. Irregular immigrants, he argues, are at once part of the political and social spheres in America, but also perpetual outsiders as a result of their legal status.
A German-language article about the difficult documentation and political treatment of "non-deportables". One of the interviewees was Albert Kraler, coordinator of the project "Measuring Irregular Migration".
Do you research irregular migration? Then our free MIrreM Spring School might be just for you! It will take place from 19 - 21 March 2025, in Krems. It offers intensive training in the use and interpretation of available data and estimates related to irregular migration. Participants will engage in hands-on courses on: statistical indicators and estimation methods for irregular migration; conceptual discussions about measuring stocks and flows; and defining migrants with irregular status.
Recently, the MIRREM project team released a new public database which brings together and assesses the latest estimates of how many migrants with irregular migration status live in various European countries and North America. The Database substantially updates previous assessments of the irregular migrant population in Europe, such as the estimates by the Clandestino research project dating back to 2008 and a subsequent study by the Pew Research Centre from 2019.
The annual IMISCOE Spring Conference is coming to Krems in 2025. It will take place from March 17 to 19 on the topic of irregular migration. The keynotes and round tables have already been scheduled. Further information will follow shortly.
We're delighted for Lea Müller-Funk, who has been awarded the ERC Starting Grant for her project RESTATE. She will investigate how refugees perceive the state and state violence before, during and after their flight and how these experiences influence their political participation. This is the second time this grant has been awarded to a researcher from our department.
The university course aims to promote the integration of migrants and improve mutual understanding between natives and migrants.
