Racism and Refuge: Understanding Sanctuary Policies in the US and Beyond (Online Talk)

The next event of our DEMIG Online Talk series will take place on January 16th at 2 p.m. Benjamin Gonzalez O’Brien, Associate Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University will show how the racist narrative of “migrant crime”, which spread across the country from the 1920s onwards, has shaped modern immigration policy and rhetoric, including the policy of sanctuaries. Irregular immigrants, he argues, are at once part of the political and social spheres in America, but also perpetual outsiders as a result of their legal status.
