Human movement from one place to the other – or occasions of non-movement and stuckness – can lead to various forms of social conflicts and can cater potential for both explicit and implicit forms of violence. In order to pinpoint some of these issues, this Online Talks Series aims to provide a nuanced and multifaceted view on conflict, violence, and crime in the context of human migration. The next talk will take place on December 12 at 2 p.m. Geographer Suzy Blandin will discuss the multiple effects of environmental conditions on (im)mobilities in Tajikistan’s Pamir Mountains.
A German-language article about the difficult documentation and political treatment of "non-deportables". One of the interviewees was Albert Kraler, coordinator of the project "Measuring Irregular Migration".
Households in ten African and Asian countries were surveyed for the recently completed EU project MIGNEX – on questions of quality of life, the tendency to migrate and return processes. All results are available on the project website mignex.org
Recently, the MIRREM project team released a new public database which brings together and assesses the latest estimates of how many migrants with irregular migration status live in various European countries and North America. The Database substantially updates previous assessments of the irregular migrant population in Europe, such as the estimates by the Clandestino research project dating back to 2008 and a subsequent study by the Pew Research Centre from 2019.
The annual IMISCOE Spring Conference is coming to Krems in 2025. It will take place from March 17 to 19 on the topic of irregular migration. Information about the program will follow shortly.
We're delighted for Lea Müller-Funk, who has been awarded the ERC Starting Grant for her project RESTATE. She will investigate how refugees perceive the state and state violence before, during and after their flight and how these experiences influence their political participation. This is the second time this grant has been awarded to a researcher from our department.
