Water for People?

The latest feature film “The Dam” by filmmaker Ali Cherri is set near the Merowe Dam in Sudan, one of the poorest countries in the world. The story revolves around Maher, a worker in a traditional brick factory that is fed by the waters of the Nile. Every evening, he secretly ventures into the desert to build a mysterious clay structure. As the Sudanese people rise up to demand their freedom, his creation slowly begins to take on a life of its own...
Ali Cherri, who was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2022, explores the profound consequences of dam construction in the film. Around 70,000 people were displaced from their villages, and significant archaeological sites were submerged. At the same time, Cherri also intertwines the political situation in Sudan. The film addresses themes of displacement, illusions, but also hope — the hope that imagination can drive political, ecological, and social change.
The Platform for Sustainable Development at the University for Continuing Education Krems, in cooperation with the Secession and the Stadtkino at Künstlerhaus, invited on 18th Februar 2025 to the Austrian premiere of “The Dam”.
