On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the University Krems, in cooperation with the Secession and the Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus, hosted the Austrian premiere of “The Dam”, the latest feature film by award-winning filmmaker Ali Cherri.

Following the screening, the artist participated in a discussion, responding to questions from the moderators and the audience. He spoke about the symbolism of the characters and settings, the central role of gaze, sound, and geographies of violence in his films, and the making of “The Dam” in Sudan.

The film was shot in 2019 against the backdrop of the Sudanese revolution, whose unrest subtly permeates the film's imagery and atmosphere. Cherri particularly emphasised his collaboration with the local population working at the brick production site – a central setting of the film. It was there that he met the film’s lead actor, who, for his very first role, has since been recognized with an award.

The audience's engaged reactions and feedback highlighted the film’s multilayered nature and openness to interpretation.

A great thanks to Ali Cherri and our cooperation partners Secession & Stadtkino Wien.
