Study Program

The study program of the Center for Applied Game Studies offers academically sound continuing education programs in the field of Game Studies and includes several Certificate Programs (CPs) in addition to the Master's program. The diversity of the research field and its equally diverse application potential are reflected in the content of the degree program, as well as in the opportunity to choose individual specializations. This allows students from a wide range of practical and professional fields to tailor their studies to their individual needs. The degree program is also (but not exclusively) aimed at people in the fields of games development, media work, schools and education, journalism and public communication, art and culture as well as professionals from a wide range of academic fields.

In the Master's program "Game Studies MA (CE)", students explore different dimensions and applications of game studies, reflect them critically and link them to their personal and professional interests, goals and demands. In addition to courses that cover game-related topics and academic practices, students choose two specializations in which they acquire advanced knowledge regarding specific areas of application that game studies are concerned with. These specializations can also be taken as independent studies in the form of Certificate Programs (CP) comprising 24 ECTS credits.

• Game Studies Fundamentals

*These Certificate Programs can also be chosen as specializations within the Master's program "Game Studies, Master of Arts (CE)". CPs completed before the start of the Master's degree program can be credited towards the Master's degree program in terms of both course content and funding.

To ensure the greatest possible flexibility for working professionals, all study programs are conducted in a part-time blended learning format (online sessions and classroom teaching).

Distance learning opportunities (in English) are currently in preparation.

In addition to its regular study program, the Center for Applied Game Studies organizes open workshops and seminars on current topics at the intersection of games, education, technology and society.

Furthermore, the Center regularly organizes conferences and lectures in which students and graduates can exchange ideas with international experts and an interested public and learn about, work on and discuss current developments in the field of game studies.  

Finally, students are also regularly involved in the Center's research activities in order to promote a smooth transition between studies and academic practice and to combine the idea of research-guided teaching with the potential of research shaped in dialog with students.
